Oversized Men's Shirt to Cute Dress DIY

Last Wednesday I realized I had run out of arts and crafts material, so I decided to take a quick trip to Salvation Army (remember Wednesday is 50% off day at Salvation Army)! For only $22, I purchased 13 shirts, one of them being a super nice men's dress shirt. The shirt was massive and long enough to be a dress so I decided to turn it into just that!





Here's What You Will Need:
* Oversized Men's Dress Shirt~ $2.50 at Salvation Army (highly suggested
* Transparent Sewing Thread
* Sewing Needles
* Fabric Scissors
* Bow tie (Optional)~ $3.00 at a costume store
* Belt or Bow Sash
* Pencil
* Ruler

Approximate Cost~ $5.50

Step 1

Lay out your oversized shirt, try it on, and make sure it is long enough to be a dress (this shirt is much smaller than the actual one I used, but I unfortunately forgot to take a picture before I started on the project).









Step 2

With your fabric scissors, carefully cut the sleeves off of your shirt and set the fabric aside.










Step 3

Fold the cut fabric of the sleeves inwards and pin them down. Now sew the fabric you have just pinned to create a clean new sleeve cuff.





















Step 4

Since this is a men's shirt, chances are that when you try on the shirt there is alot of excessive fabric at your waist and sides. Fix this problem by taking in the fabric at the sides. Draw a curved line (the pencil will wash out) on both sides of the shirt indicating how far in you want the waist to go. Use your ruler to make sure that the lines on the right and left of the shirt have the same measurements. Next, cut open the existing seams on the sides of your shirt. Now cut the excess fabric on the waist by following the curved line you drew with the pencil. WARNING: do NOT cut directly on the line, but rather cut about an away from the line. This will leave enough fabric to create a new seam later.




Step 5
The newly cut fabric on the sides of the shirt should be rough. Just like you did with the sleeves, fold in the side fabric and pin them down. At this point, you can also fix the size of the sleeves. Previously, you should have cut the side seam all the way through and into the sleeve. When you are folding in the sides of your shirt, fold some of the sleeve inwards as well until you have attained the desire arm hole size. Pin the fabric down.
Step 6
Turn the shirt inside out and sew the folded fabric together at the sides of the shirt. This will create a brand new side seam and give the shirt a more fitted look and feel.

Enjoy your new dress!!

You can add a bow tie as a fun detail or wear black tulle or a pleated skirt under the dress to add length and decorative detail!!

The Casual Daytime Cateye

         

The cateye has become a popular makeup style. Unfortunately, alot of people think that it's too dramatic during the day. I'm here to put those worries at ease and say that it is possible!

Here's what you need:

*a pallete of your favorite shadows

*dark black mascara (my favorite is Maybelline Volum' Express One by One)

*primer (I use Rimmel London Fix & Perfect Pro)

*black liquid eyeliner

*bronze shadow

*eyeliner brush

*crease brush

Please excuse the terrible lighting!!

Step 1

Make sure sure eyelids are clean and free of any other makeup residue. Coat your lids with primer so the makeup will stay in place longer.

Step 2

Brush your lids and inner corners of your eyes with a shimmery beige shadow.

Step 3

Using your crease brush, blend a shimmery bronze shadow into your crease

Step 4

Blend a dark shade of brown shadow into the outer corners of your eyes in order to attain a bit of a smokey effect.

Step 5

Use the liner brush to outline your upper lid with black shadow (this step is mainly to create a guide that you can follow when you use the liquid liner).

Step 6

Define the line you just made with your liquid liner. At the outer corner of your lids, lightly flick your wrist for a little wing (don't flick too hard! You'll end up with a mess on the side of your face)









Step 7

Coat your lashes in a very black mascara. If you want to define your wing even further, concentrate the majority of your mascara towards the outer corners of your eyes.

The Nails

I decided to jump on the badwagon and set my inner Brit free! These awesome nails were done courtesy of my aunt.

What you Will Need:

*Dark blue polish (I used NYC polich)

*Deep red polish

*White nail art polish (the thin tip brush makes it easier to create clean thin stripes)

*Clear top coat polish

Step 1

Paint all your fingers with 2 or 3 coats of deep blue polish (the number of coats depends on how thick or thin your specific polish is).

Step 2

Once your polish dries, use the red polish to draw a cross in the middle of your nail.

Step 3

Use your white art nail polish to thinly outline your red cross.

Step 4 (Optional)

This next step is for you Doctor Who fans out there! As you can see, my ring finger has the world famous Matt Smith 11th Doctor Tux bow tie combo. Paint your nail white then take a sparkly grey polish and paint the tux (make diagonal swipes). Next, draw the bow tie with a red art polish. Lastly, using a black art polish or toothpick, outline the tux and bow tie and dot the buttons.

Step 5

Seal your awesome new nails with a few coats of clear top coat.

The Fleamarket Raid

Sunday means fleamarket day! I know fleamarkets normally get a bad rep (alot of them definitely deserve it), you may be lucky enough to find a treasure trove of knick knacks! If you love DIYs and crafts, fleamarkets are the perfect place for you.                                      

I purchased all four of these shirts for the incredibly reasonable

 price of two dollars. "Those aren't very attractive..." you say? Oh don't you worry, I have major reconstructive plans for these abandoned clothes. The green tank? I'm thinking a headscarf. The "London" shirt will probably be converted into a nice comfy tank (stay tuned for my "British invasion post)! The destinies of the two button downs and the scarves are yet to be determined. If you're experimenting on a DIY project, I highly recommend thrifting for clothes at fleamarkets, Salvation Army, and Goodwill because if you accidently mess up then you lose a grand total of only about 50 cents. 

  

My new silver pocketwatch has got to be one of my favorite buys of the day. A few months ago, my parents got me a gorgeous pocketwatch necklace I had been begging them for. It was $30 so would expect it to last for a while, right? WRONG! The watch broke about two weeks after I received it in the mail. How much was the fleamarket pocketwatch? $8 including a replacement battery. Enough said ;) 

Since the first day of school is just around the corner (unfortunately), I had my eye out for quirky stuff to start the year off right with. First things that caught my attention were these super adorable bows that came in a rainbow of color and patterns. Best characteristic about the bows was their price, just one dollar each! An irresistable buy :) Next treasure I found were these unique flexible animal Iphone cases. I had never seen anything like them before! They're not only ridiculously adorable but they're soft and have plenty of padding to protect your phone. Grand total for each case: twelve well-spent dollars.

The Beachy Look

In the spirit of the season, I want to show you guys how you can get Ariel-worthy beach hair and makeup. Us Floridians sport this look all year round, but for you land-locked folks out there, it's a fun way to change it up for a day!

  Hair

 

 

Step 1

Make sure your hair is damp but not soaked. Evenly distribute a leave in conditioner (I use Mane N' Tail), and Surf Hair Texturizing Paste.

                                                                                                

                                 

 

 

 Step 2

Now grab a long sock, cut off the toes, and roll it into a ring.

Step 3

Make a tight ponytail on the very top of your head and slip the end of it through the sock ring. Evenly distribute the end hair around the ring then continue to roll the hair into it. You should end up with a donut shaped bun. Spritz some Aussie Sprunch Spray over your head.

Step 4

Let your hair dry over night and in the morning let your hair free! Fix up any flat unattractive curls/waves with a curling iron. Here's what my hair looked like after this process :)

                                                                           

        Eyes

Step 1
Spread primer on your lids to ensure that the eyeshadow stays put, then dust shimmery sand colored shadow across your lids. Use a dark matte brown shadow for your creases.
Step 2
Highlight your brows with a light silvery shadow. Next, using a liner brush and dark brown shadow (it is an angled brush), outline a thin line above your lashes. Use a dark brown pencil to define the line.
Step 3
Lastly, lightly brush your lashes with a dark brown or light black mascara and enjoy your new summer look!

Vintage Throwback: the High-waisted shorts

 Looks like high-waisted shorts have made a come back! These vintage pieces have made a successful return to the fashion scene. Celebrities like Whitney Port, Miley Cyrus, and Lauren Conrad have been sporting these versatile bottoms. They can be worn on any occasion, from window shopping with friends or date night with the boyfriend.

 If you love these shorts as much as I do and want to own a pair of your own, heed my warning. This is one of situations where thrift shopping is probably a BIG mistake. High wasted shorts you find in thrift shop truly are vintage rather than just vintage-styled. Vintage-styled high-wasted shorts that are manufactured today are designed to avoid the "wedgie effect" while actual vintage shorts tend to hide in your butt.

You do NOT want to go out in public looking like this do you?!?!



Caution: If shorts were not designed to be high-wasted PLEASE don't try and yank them up your body!

Stores like Forever 21 and Wet Seal have been racking up their shelves with this new fashion trend!

 My pair cost $25, and they were worth every penny. They don't ride up, are super comfortable, and match most of my shirts
